The Annenviertel is facing significant transformations. The redesign of the Annenstraße has been started recently and will definitely take effect on the entire area. Away from its main street too, the Annenviertel sees continuous urban transformation, mainly through the changes of business life and mobility, constant migration into the area and increased (residential) construction activity.
Participating in the exhibition in the stadtmuseumgraz are initiatives and organizations from the Annenviertel which have been working persistently on visions of living together in mutually beneficial ways, of strengthening the personal responsibility and the right to a say of the people living and/or working in the area, and of allowing free use of the public space. Numerous artistic contributions open up alternative views on the Annenviertel.
The visitors of the exhibition will come into contact with current societal issues which are negotiated in this part of the city every day. Everything here revolves around universal questions which arise in many other European cities, and beyond Europe, too:
How can the public space of a city be used by its residents as unrestrictedly as possible? In times of increasing regimentation, surveillance, interdicted, areas, and the "Ordnungswache" guards threaten the outdoor space of the Aannenviertel, too How do the local authorities deal with the continuing immigration into the city? Do we perceive it as an opportunity, as something urban in the truest sense of the word? Because: There would be no city without immigration and for centuries, the Annenviertel has been the most important area for this in Graz.
How does the urban space respond to the transformations of working and business life? Flexibility and versatility are regarded as indispensible qualities in today's professional life. In view of above considerations good education and training are more than ever essential and especially in this field there are a large number of offers in the Annenviertel.
Is our society able to empower future generations to think and act independently? And can we find ways to distribute the resources that exist in the world and in the city more fairly and, if possible, make them accessible for all of us?
In all these issues, the visionary commitment of the people in the Annenviertel, their work in the initiatives and organizations, plays an important role. It is a stroke of luck for Graz that many active citizens are at work in the Annenviertel who bring in their know-how and their accumulated insights to promote the common good.
