"Death in the Venice of the North" addresses a central aspect in the cultural history of St. Petersburg, which is associated with the widely spread notion in classical Russian literature of Petersburg as a city of death, decay, and crime. Three pointed positions of three Petersburg artists will be on view at Balkan Konsulat: On the one hand with two central representatives (Evgeniy Yufit and Vladimir Kustov) of "necrorealism", a movement that emerged in the eighties in Leningrad out of the spirit of Soviet punk, which has repeatedly made processes of dying and transgression the subject of artist reflections. On the other hand, an artist independent of necrorealism , Dmitri Shubin, presents politically explosive photographs from the "crime capital "of Russia.
