In the framework
of FUTURE HERITAGE COLLECTION, artist Azra Akšamija has called upon
the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina to take responsibility for their
own cultural heritage by making contributions to the collection - with
the intention of making the cultural development of their environment
comprehensible for future generations.
The situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is indeed special, as there is
practically no functioning museum structure to take on the task of collecting
and preserving. However, related questions can be posed, concerning these
cultural contexts. In Graz, we can investigate the question of how collections
are formed: Who has the authority to collect and what is kept in the institutions?
How can the hegemony of many collections, a reflection of the dominance
of certain segments of the population, be broken? And, who is able to
determine exactly what is “valuable” for future generations,
and therefore must be conserved? In more general terms:
What heritage do we want to leave behind?
