Christoph Grill (*1965 in Austria) travelled to all successor states of the Soviet Union between 1999 und 2010. Grand photographs were the result that document the path of these states into independence and the related ecological and economic changes. His photographs of Albania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan capture unsentimental portraits of everyday life: children playing amid the ruins of communist utopias, triumphal ararches in the middle of nowhere, grass growing in the cracks of military parade grounds. Grill‘s photographic notes locate the things seen on his travels, the people he encountered, and their will to survive, also—and in face of—the striking symptoms of decline.
