* * * * * * * * * * * * * * During her residency in Graz, the
artist Malgorzata Markiewicz worked on a tapestry, titled Hold me tight,
part of a series of collages based on second hand tapestries, a popular
form of formerly modest decoration (often used in Poland). The artist
adds extra stories and meanings, creates pieces that can be read like
riddles or rebuses. Deconstructing and recomposing, adding embroidery
and text—in Hold me tight she included poems by the Kenyan writer
Diana Sule.
Furthermore, the artist will talk about two recent works,. Firstly the
Iron Curtain for the Juliusz Slowacki Theatre in Krakow, a Curtain of
Women dedicated to 130 women important for Krakow, thus celebrating the
130th anniversary of the theatre. Secondly the Pimoa Chthulu, a spider's
web, a perfomative object with eight arms, eight legs, each cocoon-like,
hollow, which can be slipped in and crawled around, an imaginary interpersonal
network, built in tension between the gestures of two, three or many people,
in establishing new ecologies of coexistence.
Malgorzata Markiewicz is a Krakow-based artist currently spending a one-month
residency in Graz in the frame of the Styria-Artist-in-Residence (St.A.i.R.)
programme by the Styrian Government.
