TCHTI TZALUME / FOLDING PAPER

Origami folding with Armenian touch. Mikael Asatrjan creates astonishingly large figures which are folded of up to 10,000 sheets of paper. In the frame of this workshop you can fold, among other things, moving paper objects, flowers, birds, and polyangular "spheres".

Delicate stitched, fanciful Armenian letters


Armenia has a strong arts and crafts tradition. At the age of 14 Marianna Asatrjan has stitched the alphabet of her native language here in Austria. Bring along your favourite piece of clothing (jeans, T-shirt, etc.), or a table cloth, on which have always wanted to stitch these ornamental letters.

When Aslan Esiev gives away his Caucasian secret, lots of matchsticks are arranged in a way that high towers can virtually grow out of little houses. Completely without glue!

Toys like this are for the most part created by youngsters in Africa, who play with them themselves or sell them to tourists. Bruno Toya shows us how little wire cars can be created by simple means. All necessary materials will be provided by the organisers.

Pattern printed with stamps made of yam


Joseph Dim shows us how stamping templates can be cut out from the African yam and then be printed on cloth. This textile printing technique comes from the Nigerian region of Anambra-State/Ekwulobia. Please bring along the materials (cloths, scarves, T-shirts, handkerchiefs, etc.) you want to print! Everything else will be available.

Simple materials that can be found in nature are the starting point. From these the workshop group will create a jointly conceived object that virtually inscribes itself into the Volksgarten. It shall be conceived and built in a way that nobody ever considers removing it. Magic!

The artists and activists of the groups Cactus and Škart are also in great demand as designers, especially in the field of protest culture. They will conduct the workshop together and will also be able to draw on the treasures in the collection of the former printshop Alexander Bauer.

That's how the pavilion at Andrä-Platz looks like at the moment


Since 2003 there is a small wooden pavilion on the Andrä-Platz called "SHELTER". It is much in use but also a little bit in need of renovation. The artists' couple Delaine and Damian Le Bas will take care of the restyling and invites everybody who is interested to come to this square and join them. Moreover, the duo takes part in the Romale this year again.

A DRAGON FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM

A dragon is to be created from many, many textile scraps. A good dragon that protects the place. The collective building and piecing the parts together will be great fun for the young participants. And then everybody is surprised about what they have built in just a few hours! Sometime inbetween a snack will be served. Perhaps bring along old textile scraps.

Jeanne van Heeswijk runs an artist studio in Rotterdam, operating from which she has already realised art projects in numerous cities around the globe and with a large number of participants. Among other things she deals with reactivating or establishing social hubs. In this workshop you can get first-hand insight into the strategies of this renowned artist.

In cooperation with perhaps future stencil artists and already more experienced stencil makers you can explore some possibilities and tricks from the wide spectrum available. From which materials can stencils be created, what is the cost involved and how and where can they be applied?

Before you know it an A4 sheet is turned into an 8-pages booklet that forms the basis for mini comic. For the duration of an afternoon you can work together with the really versed comic artist Edda Strobl. But caution! Sometimes she filches good ideas. :-)
Paper is on the spot, maybe bring your own pencils.

In the frame of three workshops experienced radio makers from Radio Helsinki introduce the participants to the basics of free radio work (technology, collecting material, moderation, production). The participants are young adults who enjoy spending time in the Annenviertel and perhaps also visit youth clubs here. Their concerns and views about the Annenviertel will be on air in “Stimmen aus dem Annenviertel“ (Voices from the Annenviertel) at Radio Helsinki at 92.6.
