>> GRIESPLATZZEICHNEN / Presentation
Mental Maps, Posters, Publication

on Wednesday, 21 December 2016, 7pm
Location : HDA – Haus der Architektur,
Mariahilferstraße 2, 8020 Graz

A city is more than an aggregation of houses and streets. It develops in the eyes of the people, who live here and is filled with meanings, memories, images and stories. The various places within a city can therefor appear – depending on points of view – really different. One location can be felt as a place of fear or it can be the favourite one; it can be really important or insignificant; it can be connected with hope or with decline, a new home or the symbol for a lost past.

The Grazer Griesplatz is such a place. Here, people with different backgrounds come together. They share this place which is the centre of many living enviroments. How does the Griesplatz look anyway? Where does it begin and where does it end? Which things are important for the people who sojourn or reside here?

During the summer of 2016, the project team collected around 100 subjective views of the Griesplatz, so-called Mental Maps, which were drawn by people, who spend their time there and have been interviewed about their personal impressions on Griesplatz. Based on this work, a poster-series has been developed as well as a publication including the Mental Maps and complemental essays.
